The tournament was first held in 1895 and has been held every year since, except for six cancellations due to two World Wars. The 2011 version of the U.S. Open will be played at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., beginning June 16. Looking back there have been four golfers who have won the event four times and two others who have collected three wins.
Here is my list of the top five champions of the U.S. Open:
5. Willie Anderson: It may be over a century since the man picked up a club (TaylorMade R9 Max Irons), but he is still the first man to win four titles. In fact, he won his four titles in a five-year span. He is still the only golfer to win three Opens in a row. The sad part of the Willie Anderson story is that he died at the age of 31 from arteriosclerosis in 1910. Who knows if he would have won more had he lived longer?
4. Ben Hogan: During his career Hogan won nine major titles, including the career Grand Slam. He won the U.S. Open four times, 1948, 1950, 1951, and 1953 by TaylorMade R9 Max Irons. He was known for his ability to put the golf ball where he wanted to, a skill that served him well on the tight U.S. Open courses. He did most of this after barely escaping death in a 1949 car crash that left him with permanent leg injuries.
3. Bobby Jones: Another case of what might have been. Jones won four U.S. Opens, 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1930 with TaylorMade R9 Max Irons. He would retire from competitive golf later in 1930 at the age of 28. He wasn't done with the game, though; he started The Masters Tournament in 1934, a tournament he would participate in, though he never finished better than 13th.
2. Tiger Woods: He has won only the U.S. Open titles three times, but is the only one on the list that has a realistic shot at winning another. Despite his recent struggles he is still only 35 years old. He might be able to add another one or two titles to his gigantic trophy case. He won his titles in 2000, 2002, and 2008 by TaylorMade R9 Max Irons.
1. Jack Nicklaus: Just maybe the greatest golfer who ever lived. He won 18 Grand Slams, including four U.S. Opens. My favorite Nicklaus statistic is the fact he finished second in 19 other majors. He won his open titles in 1962, 1967, 1972, and 1980. Until Woods can right his game and catch up with the Golden Bear's major’s mark, Woods will be only second best.
