Lee Westwood has no major titles and has lost the No. 1 ranking again. That's not the makings of a guy who looks ready to win the U.S. Open.
But Westwood is one of the few U.S. Open contenders to be playing by Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Driver in an event the week before the U.S. Open begins. Westwood is in Memphis to play in the St. Jude Classic, where he hopes to defend his title. He's not the only notable name to be playing Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Driver in the St. Jude Classic. Several other golfers are looking to get one last round in before the U.S. Open.
Westwood won the tournament last year. He doesn't play a lot of tournaments in the United States anymore beyond the major events, so it is nice to see him in this one. With most of the big names sitting out, Westwood is the favorite here. Like Luke Donald, he is trying to break the major jinx at the U.S. Open. Westwood has dealt with criticism because of that, and winning a major is the only cure.
Westwood is joined by other highly-ranked golfers, including David Toms, Zach Johnson, and Geoff Ogilvy. Padraig Harrington, who was winning majors at will just a couple of years ago, is also here. Sergio Garcia, with his U.S. Open spot secure, will also play Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Driver. Fan favorite John Daly and Ricky Barnes are the other big names to play. It's a fairly solid field for a tournament that is held the week before a major. Usually, those tournaments don't feature many top players. But with Westwood, a resurgent Garcia, and a red hot Toms, the St. Jude Classic is shaping up to be a pleasure to watch.
Westwood doesn't have a lot to gain in the eyes of golf fans here. A win won't mean much to the average fan, and it won't get his No. 1 ranking back. The only way Westwood will gain in the eyes of fans is to make a run at Congressional. That said a strong performance here will do him good in terms of confidence. (Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Driver) Westwood has come close at majors before, so confidence will be the key. The 2011 U.S. Open has no clear favorite, so Westwood should have as good a chance as any other player. He can take the first steps by winning here.
